Portable Gauging Devices - Training Course
Course Objective
The aim of this course, a pre-requisite to obtaining a license, is to train
personnel who intend to operate portable gauges (moisture and density) in
principles of radiation safety. Operators are required to hold a license in
compliance with state legislation.
Area Of Industry Served
Any application using portable gauges for purposes such as density and
moisture content indication.
Course Content
Basic background physics. Units of measurement.
Principles of protection.
Problem solving involving the inverse square law, shielding and time.
Biological effects of radiation.
Radiation in perspective.
Types and use of radiation detection equipment.
Safety procedures.
Legal requirements, including the "Code Of Practice".
Transport of radioactive materials.
Accidents and incidents.
Practical component using portable gauges and monitoring equipment.
Course Duration
Two and a half days plus a half day for an approved qualifying
examination. Competency LevelOn completion of the course the trainee should
be able to pass the approved qualifying examination and competently operate
portable gauges and minimise doses received to such a level that the hazards
are virtually zero.
